Nagpur Municipal Corporation stops fine for not wearing mask, recovers Rs 2 crore

Nagpur: After the state government lifted all restrictions and made the wearing of masks voluntary, NMC has completely stopped levying fines on people who do not wear masks at all on roads, in commercial establishments, at functions etc. Along with this, the civic body has completely closed the coronavirus testing center at the airport.

The Relief and Rehabilitation Department, State Disaster Management, had also issued an order on Thursday. In all these restrictions imposed to stop the spread of novel covid were also withdrawn. Collector R Vimala and municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B have also issued orders to implement normalcy in the district from Friday.

The civic chief has stated that however, it is also advised that all citizens, organizations, and city establishments continue to follow appropriate coronavirus practices, including the wearing of masks. Maintaining social distance etc. is the biggest protection for the health and safety of individuals as well as society.

Along with this, while suggesting this, the collector R Vimala has said that all these measures were quite necessary for a voluntary manner.

NDS employees engaged in levying fines

It is a matter of great relief for all citizens that Nagpur Municipal Corporation has completely stopped levying fines for not wearing masks. The NDS of Nagpur Municipal Corporation used to stand at several prominent squares, He also used to visit commercial establishments and functions. Along with this, a fine of Rs 500 per person has also been imposed for not wearing a mask at all.

The civic body had also started by imposing a fine of Rs 200 with effect from the date of September 4, 2020. Till the date of September 15, 2020, the civic body had recovered around Rs 10.94 lakh from around 5,470 people. The NMC has increased the fine to Rs 500, citing frequent violations. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has also collected a fine of Rs 2 crore from about 40,368 persons between the date of September 15, 2020 and the date of March 27, 2022. Similarly, Nagpur Municipal Corporation has earned around Rs 2.12 crore by imposing fines on about 45,838 people. This amount is also equal to the income of Nagpur Municipal Corporation in a year from all the hoardings located across the city.

Nuisance Detection Squad employees engaged in levying fines for not wearing masks have reportedly been given back the responsibility of monitoring the use of banned plastics and other violations.

Ram Joshi, NMC Additional Municipal Commissioner, had also issued an order to close the testing center at the airport and about 13 employees have also been transferred to different departments. The center was opened after making RT-PCR negative reports mandatory for incoming international and national passengers.
