Elderly couple narrowly escapes bedroom ceiling collapse

The Doongaji couple had come out of the bedroom after a portion of the ceiling had collapsed.

Nagpur: An elderly couple in their 60s had their hair cut when a huge portion of the ceiling fell on their bed at their New Colony home in Sadar in the early hours of Wednesday. This is the third time when a family has narrowly escaped when a part of the roof caved in.

The Doongaji couple had come out of the bedroom after a portion of the ceiling had collapsed. Then within seconds, the rest of the ceiling along with the concrete slab portion and a very heavy chandelier had come down.

Shiraj and his wife Annahita have approached the police citing a threat to their lives. Along with this, in their complaint, the couple has also said that an unresolved problem caused the roof to collapse and “it may happen again”.

The couple has also mentioned two earlier incidents when the ceilings of different rooms had fallen.

Police are quite unsure about taking heed of the complaint

In April 2020, the couple’s six-year-old granddaughter had a narrow escape when the ceiling of her room collapsed. Along with this, according to the complainants, Shiraz’s 93-year-old mother narrowly escaped after a few months.

According to sources, Shiraz and his family also want their relatives living on the first floor to fix the drainage problem, “otherwise a big accident could have happened”.

It is also learned that the family had approached the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, but the civic officials were not able to help at all as “it is also a private property and there is a litigation going on between the family members”.

The police are also quite unsure about taking heed of the complaint and taking any legal steps as the matter is sub-judice. “We sent an officer to the property. A complaint has also been received, but a civil dispute is also going on between the family members. In such circumstances, the police cannot take sides at all,” Vinod Choudhary, senior inspector of Sadar police station said.
