On Friday afternoon, when the lorries unloaded the garbage collected from different parts of the city at Bhandewadi, the reading on the weighbridge stood at around 1,350 votes. And then despite this, about 30% of the garbage is yet to be removed from the roads in about 10 areas.

Sources engaged in managing the cleanliness works within the city for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) have said that the city generates approximately 1,150 metric tonnes of waste every day.

Due to the coronavirus restrictions in the year 2020, many citizens have also refrained from bursting firecrackers in this festival. The year 2021 was just the opposite. This year the use of bursting firecrackers has increased tremendously and then even the number of firecracker shops had increased. This year in 2021, the fire department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation issued about 665 No Objection Certificates for firecracker shops inside the city as against about 582 shops set up across the city last year.

Sanitation Workers Given Extra Time

Kaustav Chatterjee, founder of Green Vigil Foundation and environmental activist has said that “We always talk about noise and air pollution caused by firecrackers. But the production of solid waste due to firecrackers also has a very significant adverse effect on our environment.”

It has also been said that “The very high volume of solid waste generated puts an extra burden on the street cleaners. And then after that also every citizen prefer to use firecrackers on the streets instead of inside their premises to avoid the necessary cleaning activity.”

Similarly, the solid waste generated is collected by the municipal waste collector and then dumped in Bhandewadi along with the regular municipal waste. He has also told about this that similarly generated solid waste also contains many unburnt crackers, which can set fire to Bhandewadi. Because there is already a lot of dry solid waste inside Bhandewadi, They told.

According to an official of the Solid Waste Management Department, the Sanitation Department has ensured that pickup trucks make more trips than usual to transport garbage from across the city.

Sources also said that due to the paucity of sanitation workers, all the garbage generated on the day of the Diwali festival could not be removed. In many places, especially in Lalganj, Itwari, Jaripatka, Gandhibagh, etc, the sanitation workers had given extra time to clear the streets from the waste generated by the firecrackers.
