State Election Commission says dry day to be observed only on January 30

The Collectors also invoked powers under Section 135 (c) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 to issue this order.

Nagpur: The State Election Commission (SEC) has made it clear on Friday that dry day, while the sale and supply of liquor is prohibited, only the date of January 30 will be observed when elections are also scheduled for teachers’ and graduate constituencies in Maharashtra.

The clarification came after the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court set aside the Collector’s order to observe dry days during the counting of votes on January 28, 29, 30 and on February 2 in Yavatmal and other districts. The Collectors also invoked powers under Section 135 (c) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 to issue this order.

In Nagpur, Devendra Jaiswal, secretary of the District Chillar Liquor Seller’s Association, also filed a case through advocate Sumeet Bodhalkar.

The High Court even challenged the Amravati election petition

Petitioner has prayed for the complete cancellation of the election schedule announced

The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Friday disposed of the petition filed by Youth World Multipurpose Organization as the grievances of the petitioner had been resolved.

The petitioner had challenged the inaction by the Returning Officer of Amravati Graduate Constituency in not even considering his objections on the gross illegalities committed by the Assistant Returning Officers in Washim, Akola, Yavatmal, Buldhana, and Amravati. According to the petitioner, the Returning Officers also committed illegal acts while enrolling a large number of voters for registration.

It has also argued that the respondents had violated the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. And also the petitioner has prayed for the complete cancellation of the election schedule announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on the date of 5th January.
