Tomar has spent his entire life working towards the betterment of mankind through his immense knowledge and experience in the medical field. After doing his specialization in Paediatric Gastroenterology at the prestigious Harvard University, USA he was called by Oxford University to pursue his further studies on scholarship and later he moved to Kings College, London to complete his specialization in Paediatric Liver. After coming back to India, realizing the pain and suffering of children who were dealing with multiple deadly diseases Dr. Tomar set up the very 1st Pediatric Gastroenterology institute in India at the most prestigious SMS medical college in Jaipur, entirely from public donation, to address diseases common in children like diarrhea and malnutrition, which were the commonest causes of death at that time.

Finding a cure for Indian Childhood Cirrhosis

As soon he came across a disease that was so fatal that it had a 100% mortality rate and was playing an immense role in the death of many children in India he knew exactly what he had to do. Understanding the depth of agony, the children and their parents had to face because of this deadly disease known as ‘Indian Childhood Cirrhosis’, Dr. Balvir S. Tomar started his research with all the knowledge and experience he had in the medical field to find a cure for this life-threatening disease while he was working as an Assistant professor at SMS Medical College. Worked day and night to seek permanent treatment for Indian Childhood Cirrhosis, a disease that came into existence through the excessive use of utensils made of brass at that time. As brass contained a lot of copper in it, many children were intaking copper into their bodies unintentionally through milk or other eatables which led to copper serum getting inside their bodies and eventually getting stored in their livers. Because of certain Inherited genetic disorders found in the bodies of those children and family members, copper was getting absorbed by the intestines in a high quantity and rapidly which ultimately gave birth to Indian childhood cirrhosis. In Dr. Tomar’s research, he found out that a similar and common disease found in other countries known as ‘Wilson’ disease was getting cured with the use of D- Penicillamine, which was able to segregate the toxic copper from the body parts. The year was 1983, Dr. Tomar’s research and hard work paid off, as after doing the tests he came to know that D- Penicillamine was able to slow down the effects of toxic copper and segregate it from the liver in the case of Indian Childhood Cirrhosis as well. Now there was a cure for Indian childhood cirrhosis and Dr. Tomar’s pioneering work on Indian childhood cirrhosis was published in the “Indian Journal of Paediatrics.” Then it was also quoted in “Advances in Pediatrics,” published in the USA, an awesome collection of excellent research from around the world. This is published yearly by the USA, and served as a centerpiece in the prevention of this deadly disease which ultimately lead to its annihilation.

A journey filled with immense hard work with the motive of making Indian people healthier than ever is visible in the life of Dr. B.S. Tomar. But the journey is still going on with the new dreams and ambitions Dr. Tomar has in his mind which is completely dedicated to Social re-engineering to make India so advanced in the field of health and education that instead of going abroad to get treatment and education, people from other countries will come to India for world-class health treatment and education.
