NMC spent Rs 4.31 crore on honorarium, health of 156 corporators in 2021-22

Nagpur: Cash-strapped Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) through its 156 corporators The budgetary provision of about Rs 50 lakh for payment of medical bills that have already been collected has been completely eliminated.

Also in the last financial year, Nagpur Municipal Corporation had spent around Rs 4.31 crore on corporators. Keeping well in view the entire expenditure of about 156 outgoing corporators, The average monthly expenditure of each corporator is more than Rs 22,670 only. Which is more than his monthly honorarium of about 20,000 rupees.

Nagpur Municipal Corporation also has about 151 elected and five nominated corporators and each one gets a monthly honorarium of around Rs 20,000, And apart from this, a remuneration of about 100 rupees is available for participating in the same meeting of each general assembly.

In last year’s budget, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation had also set aside around Rs 50 lakh to meet the medical expenses of the corporators, including medicines and hospitalisation.

An Nagpur Municipal Corporation source said that the budgetary provision of about Rs 50 lakh is almost completely exhausted. And till now a total of Rs 49 lakh has been spent. Apart from this, many medical bills of corporators are also severely pending with the civil administration for reimbursement.

Sources have also told that in the years 2017-18 and 2018-19, the budgetary allocation for medical treatment of corporators was around Rs 30 lakh per year. However, in this also an increase of about Rs 10 lakh had been made and in the year 2019-20, about Rs 40 lakh had been allocated. After the coronavirus pandemic, it was increased to Rs 50 lakh per year in the years 2020-21 and 2021-22.

In addition, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation provided funds for tea and snacks in the offices of the mayor, ruling party leader, leader of the opposition, deputy mayor, BSP party leader, standing committee chairmen, the transport committee chairman, party leaders of NCP and Shiv Sena, and chairmen of various consultative committees which comes to around 4 lakh rupees.

Taking into account the vehicles, tea-snack, diesel, and medical bills, Nagpur Municipal Corporation had spent around Rs 26.07 crore on the corporators in the last five years (from 2017 to 2022).
