Nagpur: A 55-year-old man was left with no option but to go to the hospital’s emergency department with severe lower back pain, Which was also felt in his left leg. Because of which he could not even stand up at all. After this investigation, it has also been found that he has a slipped disc, which is very common these days.

Doctors at Wockhardt Hospital also suggested minimally invasive tubular spine surgery to remove this disc. Neurosurgery and spine consultant Dr. Rahul Zamad has said that surgery works very well. Because it was done on the same day with only a 2.5 cm incision.

Dr. Rahul stated that the patient was absolutely painless after several hours. And after being admitted in less than 24 hours, even after about 12 hours of surgery, he was discharged with very small scars on his back. This method of surgery is safer, faster, and takes much less time to correct than open surgery.

It has also been estimated that only 1 to 5% of all people will have back pain caused by slipped discs at some point in their lives. And slip discs are more common in people over the age of 30 and are about twice as common in men as in women.

Moves or holds tissue

The purpose of MIS (minimally invasive surgery) is to reduce the pressure applied to the nerves and spinal cord and to stabilize the bones of the back. It can be caused by a spinal infection, herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, lumbar spinal stenosis, and spinal tumors, instability, or bone deformities in the back.

A tubular retractor of minimally invasive surgery is used. An instrument that moves or repositions tissue so that a surgeon can access a specific area. And only once the surgery is done, the tubular retractors are removed. Doctors have also said that the risk factors such as localized infection in minimally invasive surgery are also very low compared to this open procedure. However, this doesn’t happen for everyone.

Surgeon Dr. Nilesh Gaur has also said that patient selection is very important in this process. In many situations, minimally invasive surgery may not be as safe or at all effective as conventional procedures.

Dr. Nilesh also clarified that multiple surgeries may not be possible in many high-risk patients. Then it is good to ask the doctor about its relative risks and benefits.
