New Defense PSUs: Timeout for Overtime
It is only after corporatisation that the much older system of overtime in the erstwhile Ordnance Factories has been discontinued as a part of the change in culture.
Nagpur: It is only after corporatisation that the much older system of overtime in the erstwhile Ordnance Factories has been completely discontinued as a part of the change in culture. Since the month of October, most of the factories under the 7 new Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) are strictly shifting to around 8 hours and not more.
Earlier, the work used to last for about 1 hour from the time of about 8 hours. Because of which the workers also had to pay overtime. Extra hours have to be put in to meet these goals. Due to this, there has been an additional earning of about Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 on an average for the workers as well.
Now with the end of overtime, the factories are stuck on a schedule of about 8 hours. And this has also affected productivity in many units. However, gradually the workers are also adjusting to the completely new system. Sources have said that with this there has been a lot of speed in the direction of normal production.
Brand new Defense Public Sector Undertakings are also moving towards working for about 48 hours a week under the Factories Act. And even at present, it takes about 43.75 man-hours. Because of this, there will be a full day’s work even on Saturday.
Affected the household budget
However, this move of the full shift on Saturday has left unions in dissent. And a source has also said that a meeting has been scheduled with the Secretary of Defense Production on Thursday. In which this issue has also been raised.
A union source has also said that even by eliminating overtime, the morale of the employees has been affected. And it has affected the household budget of some of them as well. The source also said that workers usually go for vehicle or accommodation advance on the basis of overtime earnings.
An employee in a factory has said that so far we have been able to meet the targets by deploying additional manpower for only one job.
A source said that there are many units where suspension of overtime can also affect productivity. As a result of which it has been continued there.
Apart from overtime, the piece work allowance is also a part of the wages of the workers. Which is completely dependent on the performance.
