Nagpur University cancels National Education Policy for UG courses from session ’23-24

On Tuesday, the university has also issued a statement that the university will not go ahead with its plan to implement NEP from the current academic year for undergraduate courses.

Nagpur: About a week after Nagpur University decided to implement the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 from the new academic session (2023-24), It has taken a U-turn much to the surprise of the academic circles of the city.

On Tuesday, the university also issued a statement that the university will not go ahead with its plan to implement NEP from the current academic year for undergraduate courses. The administration has also issued a statement in this regard on its website. There was absolutely no information on NEP for postgraduate courses at all.

The statement quoted registrar Raju Hiwase as citing “technical reasons” for the decision. Nagpur University had made all preparations to implement NEP in first-year courses. In this regard, instructions have also been given to all affiliated colleges from time to time. And as directed by Vice-Chancellor Subhash Chaudhari, due to several technical reasons, the NEP will not be applicable at all to the first-year degree UG courses in the colleges affiliated to the University (except autonomous colleges) from this session,” they said.

Just two weeks before the start of the new session

Registrar Raju Hiwase did not even pick up TOI’s call. However, Nagpur University officials have also said that the decision was taken following instructions from the Maharashtra government. “Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Dada Patil recently called a meeting on NEP implementation. It was decided in the meeting that the implementation may be deferred to the next academic session (2024-25) possibly due to lack of preparedness.”

There was a lot of confusion among colleges and students regarding the NEP and according to many teachers, NU’s U-turn will make it extremely difficult for them. “Just two weeks before the start of the new session, the top Nagpur University officials have been sitting for more than one and a half months over the government proposal of April 20 as the date for the implementation of the NEP. In just six days, he took back his decision without giving any concrete reason. We also need to give answers to the students and parents on similar incidents,” they said.
