From January 1 to December 31 last year, the Nagpur traffic police had booked more than 9.74 lakh motorists for various violations including the Motor Vehicles Act.
Nagpur: The city of Nagpur has witnessed an increase of around 114% in traffic violations in the 2021 calendar year as compared to the year 2019.
The Nagpur traffic police had booked more than 9.74 lakh motorists for various violations including the Motor Vehicles Act, From January 1 to December 31 last year. This roughly translates to about 222 riders/drivers booked per hour in the city, Those who work from 9 in the morning to 9 in the night of the police.
This is much more than the number of cases registered in the previous year and in the year 2019. In the year 2020, about 7,37,746 motorists have been punished. Whereas, in the year 2019, this figure was 4,55,402, which the data showed.
It is learned from the data prepared by the office of DCP (Traffic) Sarang Awad that Violations like using mobile phones while driving, riding without helmets, jumping red lights have seen a huge increase.
The increase can also be attributed to the high number of violators caught in the CCTV cameras installed at some intersections. On average, around 900 e-challans are being generated daily through the Command and Control Center of Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited located at Civil Lines.
Two-wheeler riders without helmets continue to top the chart of violators in the year 2021. About 2.95 lakh two-wheeler riders have been caught in the same violation. This figure was 59,692 (in 2019) and 1,84,941 (in 2020) same crime.
Wrong Side Driving Violations
Sarang is of the view that there is a need to curb several violations including driving without helmets, overspeeding, use of mobile phones, and entry of very heavy vehicles during no entry time.
An analysis of the violations registered by the traffic police of Nagpur city has revealed that the speed has increased manifold. In the year 2019, 680 violators have been booked, Whereas in the year 2021, this number increased and has increased to 22,158.
The traffic police have penalized about 48,470 motorists for using mobile phones while driving, In the year 2021.
Traffic expert and High Court lawyer Anjan Chatterjee has said that the cases of riding without helmet, speeding, use of fancy number plates, and heavy vehicle entry registered 5, 33, 15, and 5 times respectively.
He has said that there has been a 2.62 times reduction in wrong side driving violations as compared to the year 2019, but this is not factually correct at all. In fact, there may be more than 150,000 wrong-side driving cases per year, but the detection rate is very low.
According to him, life-threatening violations need to be considered very seriously.
Anjan has said that wherever there are similar provisions in the MV Act, There is a great need to suspend the license there. RTO and traffic police need to talk very soon. Increasing the fine can also work.
