Nagpur: Nagpur City and Rural Traffic Police have sent notices to more than 3.83 lakh vehicle owners. And has asked them to pay their pending e-challan or appear in the Lok Adalat to be held on February 11.
According to the data received from the police department, the traffic police of both city and rural areas have issued more than 8.31 lakh challans to about 3.83 lakh motorists. And these motorists together had not paid the fine amount of about Rs 51 crore at all.
The entire data also revealed that out of around 3.83 lakh motorists, 2,76,971 were from Nagpur city, while around 1.06 lakh were challaned by Nagpur Rural Police. And the Nagpur City Traffic Police has over 6.25 lakh challans pending, while the Rural Police has over 2.05 lakh challans pending.
City violators also owe an outstanding fine of around Rs 38.79 crore, while motorists penalized by the rural traffic police have been fined around Rs 12.78 crore.
Sources have even said that these challan cases are pending since the year 2021. Violators taking the e-challan system lightly, sources said. Citing an example, Sources said a similar Lok Adalat was held in November last year and around 3.65 lakh motorists in Nagpur district were called to pay over Rs 46 crore. But only 256 motorists appeared before the Lok Adalat and paid a fine of Rs 1.98 lakh.
Apart from strengthening the system of recovery of pending fines
The sources also said that in January last month (from January 1 to January 26), more than 59,000 motorists violated traffic rules. And traffic fines of about Rs 4.03 crore have not been paid.
Traffic experts have termed this increase in pending e-challan cases as very alarming. Traffic rules are getting affected a lot due to this, they said. Giving examples, traffic experts have also pointed out that in the year 2022, there has been a significant increase in the number of traffic violation cases. So what is the number of accidents.
Apart from strengthening the system of recovery of pending fines, the transformation of the department is also very important. Experts have also said that ignoring this whole issue can be very costly in future.
