Maharashtra Pollution Control Board finds lapses in CSTPS compliance in flyash leakage instructions

Chandrapur: An inspection conducted by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board officials on Tuesday completely refuted the claims in the compliance report submitted by Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station regarding discharge of fly ash from ash slurry pipeline into the Irai river.
Even before this, on the date of March 1, a large quantity of fly ash from the fly ash slurry pipeline passing over the river had also leaked into the Irai river. Following a complaint lodged by Rajesh Bele, President, Sanjeewani Paryawaran Samajik Sanstha, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board also imposed environmental compensation of about Rs 1.15 lakh and also forfeited the bank guarantee of Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station of about Rs 10 lakh.
Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station is required to rectify the leakage in the pipeline in about three to seven days. Instructions had also been given to clear the entire fly ash from the Irai River and the surrounding agricultural area from the fly ash pond and the road leading to the stormwater drain.
The Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station Management had also submitted a compliance letter on the date of 7th March claiming to have complied with the instructions. Rajesh Bele had also vehemently opposed the claims of Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station compliance and had also filed a fresh complaint on Saturday. In which it was alleged that fly ash is still in the Irai River, Present along the road and in agricultural areas.
Directed the plant management
Inspections conducted by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board officials have also found substance in Rajesh’s claims. Maharashtra Pollution Control Board officials have also found deposits of fly ash in the Irai river along the road leading to the fly ash pond and in agricultural areas along the pipeline. The officials have also noticed the dust and fly ash accumulated on the side of the road leading to the ash pond and saw very heavy dust in the road during the movement of these vehicles. There was no arrangement for the sprinkling of water along the roadside to suppress the dust.
Leakage in fly ash slurry pipeline has been found to be rectified. Maharashtra Pollution Control Board officials have also directed the plant management to immediately remove the ash accumulated in the Irai river. Along with this, he has also instructed to start sprinkling on the road with immediate effect the ash accumulated in the agricultural area adjacent to the slurry pipeline and on the side of the road.
