Nagpur Municipal Corporation survey finds 1,386 new buildings without fire NOCs
This fact has come to the fore after a detailed survey and inspection of high-rise, commercial, industrial and educational buildings carried out by nine fire stations in the municipal limits.
Nagpur: Around 1,386 buildings, including 288 educational institutions, have been constructed without any objection certificate from the Fire and Emergency Services Department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
This fact has come to the fore after a detailed survey and inspection of high-rise, commercial, industrial and educational buildings carried out by nine fire stations in the municipal limits.
The fire department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation has initiated action against the violators under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006.
A senior official of the department has also said that the owners of these buildings have not sought the mandatory NOC at all. “These buildings were found to be in violation of mandatory clearances,” the officer said, adding, “Private educational institutions, hospitals, and industrial buildings were not equipped to deal with the fire. Any untoward incident could have proved fatal.”
Department has initiated action under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention
A preliminary inspection of these buildings has also raised doubts about whether the owners have sought to build approval plans from the town planning department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation or the Nagpur Improvement Trust. The department has initiated action under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006. And also notices have been given to the occupants of these buildings and they have been asked to install fire extinguishers.
Fire extinguishing measures have already been started in 149 of the list of buildings that have violated the norms. “Most of them have also assigned private agencies for this purpose,” he added.
So far the department has issued NOCs to 5,595 buildings including about 1,496 residential and 665 industrial. And also the fire rules have not been followed in these also. Only 903 have achieved fire compliance.
