Police hope to get inspiration from book based on reforms

In the program run by advocate Anita Sarkar, Singh also talks about his purpose in writing the book.

Nagpur: Retired IPS officer and Padma Shri Prakash Singh’s book on police reform has also been discussed in the monthly session of the Vidarbha Literature Festival organized on Saturday. Simultaneously, ‘Struggle for Police Reforms in India’ also reflects the struggles Singh faced during his tenure while trying to implement reforms in the Indian police force.

In the program run by advocate Anita Sarkar, Singh also talks about his purpose in writing the book. “Even during my service, I completely refused to turn away from my morals. However, it has also resulted in abandonment, humiliation, and suspension. I have also filed a lot of petitions regarding loopholes in the system but they are still pending. The Indian police force also consists of people from scholarly backgrounds and without reform, they will also lose their idealism and fall into shambles. This book will provide the guidance these bright minds are seeking.” They said.

Even the most intelligent mind is swept away by the current of external forces due to a lack of support

Singh has also talked about how civil servants sometimes played into the hands of their political masters. “During British rule, this force was ‘politically useful’ to take control of the Indian people, and even after independence, the opportunities were missed under enlightened leaders. Due to political influence, the police force was used as a tool and this constant manipulation has been a major deterrent.” Singh said.

Police officers are not moralists at all. Even the most intelligent mind is swept away by the current of external forces due to a lack of support. Along with this, the consequences of opposing equality also stand alone and this too washes away the layers of their idealism. Police have been politicized. Politics has been criminalized, Singh said.

Singh also said that until there is no reform, it is much better for police officers to be worldly rather than idealistic. “I also hope that this book will serve as an inspiration for the future generation of police also,” Singh said.
