Less than 9% of women who delivered in January were Covid positive in Nagpur district

A total of 3,133 institutional deliveries took place in district Nagpur in the month of January 1 to 30. Of these, only 270 were coronavirus positive.

Nagpur: Dispelling another myth that this third wave will affect expectant mothers very badly, The data released by the Divisional Health Office clearly states that less than 9% of the women who delivered in the month of January got tested for coronavirus in district Nagpur.

A total of 3,133 institutional deliveries took place in district Nagpur in the month of January 1 to 30. Of these, only 270 were coronavirus positive.

Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) were the major hospitals where there was also a positive delivery of coronavirus. Special coronavirus delivery rooms and wards are functioning in both these hospitals for pregnant mothers. Special arrangements were also made for coronavirus positive mothers in selected hospitals in private set-ups.

Where Government Medical College and Hospital did 93 deliveries of coronavirus positive mothers, While Mayo made 39 deliveries. This data further shows that 60% of coronavirus deliveries were C-sections. The doctors of both these hospitals have also told that the death of a coronavirus positive mother or a coronavirus positive newborn has not been reported at all.

National Family Health Survey

A senior Government Medical College and Hospital doctor has said that most of the children are quite safe. About 1% of them were not coronavirus positive at birth at all. Mothers also recovered very fast and till now there is no news of any death at all.

On the delivery of coronavirus-positive mothers by caesarean section, doctors said that the rate is higher than normal.

A doctor has said that nationally, about 47.4% of babies born in the private sector are delivered by surgical methods. In the government sector, this percentage is around 15%. In the case of coronavirus-positive mothers, doctors also had to recommend a surgical delivery.

The fifth National Family Health Survey (NFHS) also states that the national C-section rate is around 21.5% which is higher than the World Health Organization’s ‘norm’ of about 10-15%.

According to doctors, coronavirus-positive pregnant women above 35 years of age, diabetic, obese, or have high blood pressure. As women with the pre-existing disease and a history of clotting in the organs were asked to go for a C-section.
