31 measles cases reported in 45 days this year in Nagpur
Of the 31 cases reported so far, 11 are from Mominpura, putting the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) administration on alert.
Nagpur: Between January 1 and February 17 this year, around 31 cases of measles have been confirmed in the city. This number is almost three times as compared to the whole year 2022 when 11 cases came to the fore.
Of the 31 cases reported so far, 11 are from Mominpura, putting the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) administration on alert. It has also been observed that people from Muslim-majority areas are reluctant to take the measles vaccine.
The department is currently planning some innovative campaigns involving religious leaders, social organizations and community influencers to convince the people of Mominpura to get their children vaccinated against measles.
In this regard, a review meeting has been held at the municipal headquarters on Friday. “Many parents are reluctant to vaccinate their children because of rumors and confusion. As a result, the risk of measles infection is gradually increasing in the city,” Additional Municipal Commissioner Ram Joshi said.
Ram Joshi has also told that about 82 measles suspects have been found in the city this year. As well as tests have fully confirmed 31 measles cases while two children have tested positive for rubella.
An additional dose of the measles vaccine has been planned
Maximum of 11 measles cases were registered in the Gandhibagh circle, followed by 10 in the Nehru Nagar circle, six in Aashi Nagar circle, two in the Mangalwari circle, and one each in the Laxmi Nagar circle and Dharampeth circle.
An additional dose of the measles vaccine has been planned to protect children from about 9 months to 5 years of age. Along with this, Nagpur Municipal Corporation Health Officer Dr. Narendra Bahirwar has appealed to the residents of Mominpura and other areas to take additional doses free of cost at the Civil Health Center.
A general physician practicing in Mominpura also told TOI that the number of measles patients could be higher than the official figures. “Early symptoms like fever, chills, red eyes and cough can be seen in many children. Since most of them have been vaccinated, They are recovering well without any serious complications. Others get rashes, which spread from the forehead to the neck and limbs,” The doctor said.
