6 months later, sewers overflow in areas of west Nagpur, posing a health hazard
Over 1,000 residents of nearby areas such as Dwivedi Colony, Misal Colony, Patel Nagar, and Kamaruddin Layout have been facing problems due to overflowing sewers for the last nearly six months.
Nagpur: In West Nagpur, about 100 meters concreted by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has become completely unsafe for driving due to sewer overflow.
Over 1,000 residents of nearby areas such as Dwivedi Colony, Misal Colony, Patel Nagar, and Kamaruddin Layout have been facing problems due to overflowing sewers for the last nearly six months.
Local residents have also told TOI that movement on the main road, which connects the areas to Gittikhadan Road, has been restricted. This has become impossible due to overflow of sewers on the stretch. TOI has visited the same spot and also found that one of the sewerage chambers at the entry point of Adivasi Nagar had overflowed. Residents are pretty much forced to take a detour as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation ignores repeated complaints.
While passing over the wet patch, two wheeler riders lose their balance. “It has also led to many accidents, as the two-wheeler often skids on the wet surface,” Vijay Kawale, who runs a tea stall in front of the overflowing sewer, said.
“Drain water keeps flowing on the road between Adivasi Nagar and Shamshuddin Layout. Several complaints have been registered about it in the last six months.” Shamshuddin Layout resident Amjad Khan said. TOI tried contacting Assistant Commissioner Mangalwari Zone Vijay Hamne, but he was not available for comment at all.
Dozen houses in this area keep their main doors
Khan has also told that after the first complaint was registered in Mangalwari zone, the officials had also assured to solve the problem. Since then, a lot of sewer water has also flowed on this route, and many complaints have been registered. Even after this, the Municipal Corporation is sitting with closed eyes on the problems of the residents. At present, at least a dozen houses in this area keep their main doors and windows shut because of the foul-smelling water.
“Another resident Kanhaiya Kulmethe has also said that after the dissolution of the general body, the NMC had completely stopped resolving civic issues. Officials of Public Health Department, Engineering Department and Mangalwari Zone of Nagpur Municipal Corporation should be sent to jail for their negligent attitude. How can they ignore the complaints lodged by the residents?” they said.
There is also a menace of mosquitoes due to sewerage water in the area. Many local people have complained of diseases like dengue, malaria. Locals also say that if it is neglected for a long time, then it can also give rise to water-borne diseases like jaundice and typhoid. And already every other house has stomach infection patient, he claimed.
Everyday we have to pass through the overflowing sewer water. said a resident. “We are prone to skin infections,” he added.
