Traffic fine increased: Rs 500, 3 months suspended license for riding without helmet

Nagpur: Driving a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet will attract a fine of Rs 500 and suspension of the violator’s driving license for 3 months, About 33 traffic violation fines have been amended by the Home Department, which has implemented the amended Motor Vehicles Act 1988.

As per the law, at present, vehicles with fancy number plates, in fonts other than those prescribed in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, will attract a fine of up to Rs 1,000. Earlier this fine was only 200 rupees.

An official of the Regional Transport Office has said that the government has increased the fine from Rs 200 to Rs 1,000 for driving a vehicle without reflectors or tail lamps. And those allowing unlicensed persons to drive or operate their own vehicle will also be fined Rs 5,000, which was Rs 2,300 earlier.

The government has also revised the fee by introducing the classification of vehicles on high speed. Initially, it was common to impose fines on speeding vehicles. At present, a fine of Rs 1,000 will be levied for driving more than the permissible speed limit for 2 and 3 wheelers also. Whereas for tractor LMV (Rs 2,000) and other vehicles including trucks (Rs 4,000), it will be Rs 1500 only.

Old Penalties & Fines

Along with this, the fine for overloading vehicles has also been increased in the amended MV Act. Earlier this fine was only Rs 10,000, which has now been increased to Rs 20,000. An additional amount of Rs 2,000 per tonne of additional load and liability to pay offloading charges will also be imposed on the violators.

Traffic experts have also pointed out that the amendment in this fine will only act as a deterrent to violators, Which will ultimately reduce road accidents in the whole of Maharashtra to a great extent.

Simultaneously, the notification has raised the fine for basically acting as a deterrent to errant motor vehicle users. Some states have already increased the old penalties and fines which were very low. And wrong parking has also been omitted with a nominal fine of Rs 200. and section 180 permitting unauthorized persons to drive vehicles. Along with enhanced fines, which can also result in imprisonment of up to 3 months to the owner of the vehicle, which magistrates rarely enforce, traffic expert and High Court lawyer Anjan Chatterjee has said.

In some violations, the penalty for second and subsequent offenses has also been increased, he added. RTOs and traffic police have already been provided with handheld devices that can detect repeated traffic violations. Chatterjee has also said that the consequences of the amended fine can be seen only with strict implementation of the amended Act.
