Some elephants cross river and go to Brahmapuri Mandal, go back same night
Officials have stepped up their vigil and are also monitoring the movement of the herd in coordination with district Gadchiroli counterparts.
Chandrapur: Forest workers in the Brahmapuri forest division are on their toes since a herd of elephants entered the North Brahmapuri forest range on the night of Wednesday, Although a part of these herds cross the Wainganga river from the Gadchiroli side to enter district Chandrapur, he returned the same night.
Officials have stepped up their vigil and are also monitoring the movement of the herd in coordination with district Gadchiroli counterparts. The elephants coming from Odisha had entered the Dhanora and Murumgaon ranges of district Gadchiroli on the date of 17 October.
This herd of about 22 elephants greatly destroyed the crops in the district Gadchiroli and kept on moving towards the south for 2 months. Meanwhile, in the forest of Gadchiroli, a female elephant also gave birth to a calf, and then their number had increased to 23. This herd of elephants had already moved for about 50 km with the help of forests and fields to reach the banks of the Wainganga river in the Vadsa forest division several days ago.
Herds of these elephants were also seen on the banks of the Wainganga river dividing the Amori forest range in district Gadchiroli from the North Brahmapuri range in Chandrapur on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Amori Forest Range
The name of the Deputy Conservator of Forests of Brahmapuri Forest Department is Dipesh Malhotra. He has said that a part of a herd of elephants, which also included about 8-10 jumbo, had crossed the Wainganga river on the night of Wednesday. And after staying for several hours in the northern Brahmapuri range, these elephants again joined their own herd in the Amori range.
He has also claimed that there are 3 calves in this herd of elephants. 2 of them had crossed the river during the night time with very large jumbos, but then returned.
Malhotra has said that it is also likely that a part of the herd of elephants crossed the river to reconnaissance for their onward journey. Because of this, we are not taking any risk.
He has also claimed that he has issued an alert with the help of davandi (public announcements) and has also warned people about what to do and what not to do if a herd of elephants crosses the river.
