Medical teachers want permanent job, government to appoint profs on contract
The Directorate of Medical Education and Research has issued an advertisement for the appointment of doctors 'on contract' in the private sector for about 364 days in the GMC of the entire state on the date of March 11.
Nagpur: The doctor has been teaching medical students in Maharashtra for some years as a Professor and Assistant Professor in about 22 government medical colleges of the state. Right now they are only agitating for time bound promotion and making their appointments permanent. The agitation has been going on for about 45 days and Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association is all set to intensify the movement by withdrawing patient services in non-emergency wards from Monday.
The Directorate of Medical Education and Research has issued an advertisement for the appointment of doctors ‘on contract’ in the private sector for about 364 days in the GMC of the entire state on the date of March 11. These doctors will be on a fixed payment of about Rs 1.70 lakh to about Rs 2.30 lakh per month only. This has greatly upset the already serving professors who want to make their jobs permanent.
Dr Samir Golawar, General Secretary, Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association has said that making temporary professors and assistant professors permanent and giving them time-bound promotion is their main demand. Medical Education Minister Amit Deshmukh has said that inclusion is difficult due to several rules of the Supreme Court. This is very confusing.
Decision of a simple cabinet
From the advertisement released by DMER on March 11, it is revealed that about 282 teachers will be appointed on the basis of fixed payment. Along with this, 139 assistant professors and 83 professors in clinical subjects and 32 assistant professors and 28 professors in super specialty subjects are also included. Doctors are still asking the reason behind the appointment of private doctors, while government doctors are also available long ago.
Dr. Samir Golawar has also said that the existing doctors can also participate in the decision of a simple cabinet. This was done earlier in the year 2009 and 2016. Medical colleges in the state have benefited immensely from such inclusion. Due to these two decisions, today more than half the posts in medical colleges have been filled. In the last about four-five years, the number of students has increased a lot and the colleges are still doing very well.
