Case registered against 3.10 lakh two wheeler riders for violation in Nagpur
Although the traffic police have not maintained category-wise violations at all, But the RTI also revealed that around 2,95,521 helmet-less two-wheelers have paid a fine of over Rs 2.33 crore.
Nagpur: For violating traffic rules in the city, 2 wheeler riders are the most infamous. Out of around 5.83 lakh violators involved in around 13 separate violations in the year 2021, two-wheeler riders account for around 3.10 lakh cases. Four-wheeler drivers were involved in around 46,157 violations analyzed by the city’s traffic police. The traffic police have also given this information to activist Abhay Kolarkar under an RTI.
Although the traffic police have not maintained category-wise violations at all, But the RTI also revealed that around 2,95,521 helmet-less two-wheelers have paid a fine of over Rs 2.33 crore. Similarly, the traffic police has collected fines of more than Rs 15.22 lakh from around 14,544 two-wheeler riders, While 46,157 four-wheeler drivers have imposed a fine of more than Rs 69.89 lakh for driving without wearing a seat belt.
Traffic Police has booked 16,724 people for dangerous driving and around 22,158 for over speeding. and recovered a fine of Rs 49.62 lakh and Rs 49.73 lakh from them respectively.
This data also indicates unregulated autorickshaws on city roads. According to the RTI reply, 26,138 autorickshaw drivers were punished for various violations such as driving without badges, meters, and uniforms. The traffic police has also recovered a fine of Rs 31.72 lakh from the drivers of three wheelers.
City police are facing the challenge
The data also showed that action against traffic violators has increased significantly in the last three calendar years. In the year 2019, the traffic police recovered Rs 8.49 crore from around 4,55,402 violators. In the year 2020, 7,33,234 violators have paid a fine of more than Rs 11.12 crore and more than 9.74 lakh violators have paid Rs 12.56 crore in the year 2021.
Along with this, despite intensifying action against heavy vehicles entering the city limits, the city police are facing the challenge of curbing this menace. In the year 2019, the traffic police had challaned 4,799 trucks, in the year 2020, 10,951 and in the year 2021, 24,611.
Abhay has pointed out that the huge increase in violations should have improved the city’s traffic, But that has not happened at all. Along with this, citizens should also cooperate with the traffic police by following the rules of all motor vehicles.
