Kidney-friendly low dye angioplasty offers new hope for chronic kidney disease patients

An advanced technique of kidney-friendly low-die angioplasty is now in vogue which significantly reduces the health risks and also gives new hope to the patients.

Nagpur: Patients with extremely weak kidneys often have to face the additional challenge of artery blockage. However, performing angioplasty on such individuals is much more risky. Because the dye used can put a strain on the kidneys, potentially leading to organ failure.

An advanced technique of kidney-friendly low-die angioplasty is now in vogue which significantly reduces the health risks and also gives new hope to the patients.

Renowned cardiologist Dr. Rhishikesh Umalkar of Ganesh Heart Care Hospital has performed five kidney-friendly low-dye angioplasty procedures with complete success.

By sharing information about this technology and its benefits, Dr Rhishikesh Umalkar said, “Known as ultra-low contrast PCI, this technology holds immense potential for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, revolutionizing the field of therapeutics in Vidarbha.”

The procedure also requires very minimal dye, thereby reducing the burden on the kidneys. “By using even small amounts of contrast dye, the kidneys can more easily filter it out, helping the heart to regain strength and improving organ function over time.”

This process requires a lot of specialized equipment

One of the five cases has turned out to be too challenging. “The patient, a 58-year-old man, had multiple complications. Unaware that he was diabetic, he needed ventilator support after suffering a heart attack,” Dr. Rhishikesh Umalkar said.

Nephrologist Dr. Amit Pasari also highlighted the risks associated with conventional angioplasty for chronic kidney disease patients and put a lot of emphasis on the possible permanent damage to the kidneys. “With ultra-low contrast angioplasty, we use minimal dye, well below the patient’s estimated glomerular filtration rate. This ensures easier filtration by the kidneys and gradually improves their function as the heart gets stronger and pumps blood more efficiently,” They said.

Diabetologist Dr. Shailesh Pitale also emphasized the importance of regular blood sugar monitoring and maintaining controlled glucose levels to prevent similar complications in young age.

This process requires a lot of specialized equipment like an IVUS machine and a cath lab. Both of these are also easily available in many hospitals in Nagpur.
