NAGPUR: After the Covid lull, the craze of custom registration numbers for vehicles is back in the city.
The allotment of choice numbers in this city has seen an increase of about 33% in the revenue of the government.
Data sourced from the transport department revealed that the state exchequer earned around Rs 4.70 crore from the city for VIP registration numbers of vehicles.
In the year 2021-22, the department earned ₹ 3.15 crore in revenue the same period.
Assistant RTO Harshal Dake has also said that revenue from choice numbers is going north. “Numbers like 0007, 0009, 0090, 0099, 1234, 0123, 7007, 7777, 7700, 5555 and 0555 are always in demand as well. And despite the high fee, many vehicle buyers are more than willing to pay a higher price for a VIP registration number.” ARTO said.
The choice number fee ranges from around ₹5,000 to ₹4 lakh. And apart from this RTO also provides a jumping series number and the fee for this also ranges from ₹3,000 to ₹7,500.
Department earned Rs 1.96 crore from the sale
“The department had put up around 300 choice numbers for sale. Of which around 100 were in demand, while the rest remained unsold.” Said Harshal Dake.
In the year 2018-19, the RTO earned a revenue of ₹1.37 crore by selling choice numbers. In 2019-20, the revenue was also ₹ 2.29 crore. With the registration of new vehicles in 2020-21 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there was a decrease in the demand for choice numbers.
The department had then earned Rs 1.96 crore from the sale of the most preferred numbers.
“When there is more than one application for a number, the number is auctioned. This often happens with numbers like 9, 786, 1234 etc,” Harshal Dake said.
In the year 2022, the transport department had proposed to increase the four wheelers for choice number 0001 from ₹ 3 lakh to ₹ 5 lakh now, And instead of around ₹ 50,000, ₹ 1 lakh was being charged for two and three wheelers.
