NMC pumping additional water from 5,257 wells, 720 borewells

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has already significantly ramped up its pumping of about 30 Million Liters Per Day (MLD) of water to meet the hugely increased demand this summer.

Nagpur: In view of the acute water shortage in the city, the NMC has now started tapping the groundwater sources to augment the supply and the Department of Water Works is drawing water from around 720 borewells and 5,257 wells across the city.

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has already significantly ramped up its pumping of about 30 Million Liters Per Day (MLD) of water to meet the hugely increased demand this summer. And at present, it is also pumping about 695 MLD of water from Kanhan river and Pench reservoir.

Nagpur Municipal Corporation has also installed water boosters at 67 borewells and 409 wells. And groundwater sources such as borewells and wells are also fully ensured through taps too many residents, most notably in central and eastern Nagpur, According to the data received from the Department of Water Affairs.

Along with this, the maximum number of borewells and wells in use are under the areas of Satranjipura, Gandhibagh, Ashi Nagar, and Lakarganj. And even the Dharampeth area, which is claimed to be covered under the 24×7 water supply scheme, is also using 101 borewells and 84 wells to meet the water requirements.

City have faced a severe water crisis

It was also revealed from the data that the water of 126 borewells and 175 wells is not fit for use at all – Either because of contamination or because of a defect. Sources have also said that due to depleting groundwater levels, many borewells have stopped working altogether. Sources in the Water Works Department and Orange Water Works Limited have also said that many wells have also dried up completely.

Residents also say that many borewells have now suffered a lot. While there are also reports of contaminated well water.

He has said that along with this, 31 borewells in division number 2 have also suffered a lot. Due to this, the residents of this part of the city have also faced a severe water crisis. And former corporator Manoj Sangole has also said that in many areas of this block, water has not reached the pipe at all. Because of this, the civic body had dug about 1,009 borewells in different areas under the area of ​​Ashi Nagar.

Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B recently it was also announced that Nagpur Municipal Corporation will conduct third-party audit of the work done by the private operator OCWL for the work liability and performance of the last about 10 years as well.
