Maha vet interns get stipend of only Rs7.5k, less than half of many states

Nagpur: The interns of veterinary colleges affiliated to Maharashtra Animal and Fisheries Science University (MAFSU) on Monday staged an agitation demanding an increase in their internship allowance (stipend).

Suyog Nakade of Maharashtra Veterinary Students Association has said that out of the total internship allowance of Rs 7500, about Rs 3,000 is provided by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Rs 4,500 by our university Maharashtra Animal and Fisheries Science University. This is not enough at all to meet their monthly expenses. The state government is not contributing to his allowance in any way at all. This will provide them around Rs 15,000 to Rs 18,000.
He has said that the organization is also sending proposals to the government for the last two years, but no response of any kind has come. If their demands are not heeded at all, Then they will completely stop working in all the five colleges of Maharashtra as well as the Veterinary Clinic campus.
Helps farmers a lot
Maharashtra Animal and Fisheries Science University officials have also told that they have submitted the proposal regarding internship allowance to the State Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Department long back. Sunil Kedar of district Nagpur is the minister of this department.
A senior official of Maharashtra Animal and Fisheries Science University has said that they get about 405 seats of graduate veterinary science and animal husbandry every year. The state government will have to contribute at least Rs 7,500 to take the internship allowance to about Rs 15,000. Along with this, the government will need about Rs 3.65 crore annually and about Rs 18.22 crore for the next five years.
The students have said that this amount is very less but it will benefit everyone at the state level. A student has said that he works in rural areas and helps farmers a lot. They have to make this journey, Along with this, you have to live in rented premises too. And also have to buy food during their stay at other places. And just Rs 7,500 is not enough for any such profession.
