Mumbai: The increasing trend of social media platforms have paved way for cyberbullying or trolling of various celebrities. Sonakshi Sinha, on falling prey to online negativity, launched a campaign in association with Mission Josh named ‘Ab Bas’.
The campaign was an initiative towards spreading awareness on cyber security, impact of online harassment and legal options to deal with such cases.
The cyber cell of Mumbai Police arrested a 27-year-old man charged for using foul language and online harassment of the Rowdy Rathod actress.
“I am immensely grateful to cyber crime branch Mumbai for taking prompt action and being so supportive. I took this step to report the culprits so that even others gather the courage to do the same. Ab Bas, we will not watch and allow online abuse to happen to us or others,” said Sonakshi.
The actress further added that she was “extremely glad to be part of a campaign like this to help as many people as I can, who have been subjected to online harassment”.
Sonakshi had earlier closed her comments section due to increasing trollers. Recently, the actress opened her comments section once again on Instagram and demanded everyone to not make any instigating comments.
Despite of Sonakshi’s request, some users continued harassing her. As a result, her team approached cyber crime branch of Mumbai Police and an FIR was lodged against the offenders on August 14.
The cyber cell, on August 21, arrested Shashikant Jadhav, from Aurangabad who had not only been harassing Sonakshi but many other actors too.
About the development, Rashmi Karandikar, DCP of Mumbai Cyber Crime Branch, said: “We have arrested the accused. Mumbai police cyber cell continues to play a role in making the internet a safe place. Also, women’s safety has always been our priority. Cyber bullying and cyber stalking are punishable offences. We should all work in the direction of making the internet safe for all.”
Not just Sonakshi, but many more celebrities come across online harassment on a daily basis. Once reported, the cyber cell tracks the troll and take actions against them.
