First State Government Owned Wildlife DNA Analysis Laboratory at RFSL in City

Nagpur: State home minister Dilip Walse-Patil and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will inaugurate India’s first state-owned wildlife DNA analysis laboratory at the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) in the city on Friday. There are 2 Central Government owned Wildlife DNA Laboratories at Hyderabad and Dehradun.

A fast-track DNA testing unit will also be inaugurated at Regional Forensic Science Laboratory with similar facilities in both Pune and Mumbai, except the Wildlife DNA laboratory. and in particular for cases registered under the provisions of the Protection of All Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, 2012. Under the central government’s scheme Nirbhaya, there will also be a fast track DNA testing unit inside 5 laboratories of the state including Kolhapur and Nanded, developed with a special fund of about Rs 53 crore.
Make Maharashtra the first state
Director General of Police, Technical and Legal, Sandeep Bishnoi, who was also accompanied by Sangeeta Ghumatkar, Director of Laboratories, and Vijay Thakare, Deputy Director, Regional Forensic Science Laboratory, said on Thursday that the Wildlife DNA Analysis Laboratory would also make Maharashtra the first state to have a similar facility. “This laboratory will go a long way in the identification of these species and other tests apart from bolstering the prosecution case against the crime of wildlife. Now we can also do a blood test on the weapons recovered from these poachers.”
Sandeep has said that he will also suggest to the HM and CM that these forensic science institutions should be brought under the Home Department instead of the Education Department.
State home minister Dilip Walse-Patil will also chair meetings to review the crime and law and order situation in new premises for Hudkeshwar Police Station, creche facilities in 6 police stations, new police quarters, and a separate for Gadchiroli Range and Nagpur City, Range.
