Fraudster caught after depositors lost Rs 9 crore meets CP Amitesh Kumar in Maharashtra

Although the police have also come to know that around 170 people have deposited money in his scheme as well.

Nagpur: Sumeet Akre, an alleged fraudster who duped depositors of around Rs 9 crore, was raided in Mahatma Gandhi Nagar of Hudkeshwar early in the morning last week by a special team constituted by CP Amitesh Kumar. It is also learned that he was also planning to go underground.

Although the police have also come to know that around 170 people have deposited money in his scheme as well. But about 35 people have approached the Economic Offenses Wing of the Crime Branch, which is probing the entire matter.

After Sumeet Akre started his company and financial scheme in the year 2018, he defrauded depositors from different parts of Maharashtra like Buldhana, besides many other cities including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nashik and even West Bengal.

Sumeet Akre also lured depositors with attractive returns, up to 6% interest on investments above Rs 10 lakh and up to 5% for schemes below Rs 10 lakh. And at the same time Sumeet Akre had also told the gullible depositors that they were investing 30% in the stock market and the rest in gold and property to give them higher returns. Though they made some payments to the depositors, many did not get any returns whatsoever.

Depositors of Sumeet Akre repeatedly knocked on the door

EOW’s investigating officer assistant PI Sushma Bisandare has said that Sumeet Akre is yet to clear dues of around Rs 3 crore. But the enormity of the hoax could increase significantly if more victims approach the police and evidence is unearthed as the investigation progresses.

“Akre was an IT company employee with knowledge of share trading. He worked in Noida before returning to the city and setting up a financial business,” Bisandare said, Adding that CP is closely monitoring the matter.

Depositors of Sumeet Akre repeatedly knocked on the door of the Hudkeshwar police station but got no help in any way. The matter was taken up with the CP during one of his regular grievance redressal meetings, following which he issued instructions to nab Sumeet Akre before he disappeared from the city.

API Bisandare has also said that Sumeet Akre has been sent to custody till February 16. “We are also recording statements, extracting various electronic evidence and other evidence,” Said API.
