Over 1,800 applications for 100 fireman posts
Even against recruitment notices for about 100 new firefighters, this department has received over 1,800 applications.
Nagpur: After more than two decades, the Fire and Emergency Services Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation is now conducting a recruitment drive to fill the vacant posts of Firemen.
Even against recruitment notices for about 100 new firefighters, this department has received over 1,800 applications.
Chief Fire Officer Rajendra Uchake has said that a candidate should also have passed class 10 with fire fighting course from State Academy, any local self-government, or Maharashtra Technical Board, Who is eligible for this post.
Qualified candidates will also go through the selection process including swimming, and physical tests starting from the date of 25th April.
Misuse the services of firemen
Along with this, at present also the department is facing a huge manpower crunch. And out of 872 sanctioned posts for nine fire stations, only 150 posts have been filled. Out of about 300 posts firemen, only 44 are currently working.
Because of this, looking at the total properties in the city, there is only one fireman behind about 14,773 properties. And most of the vacancies in the department are around – more than 500 – for firemen only.
Sources have also said that very important posts like that of Station Officer, Assistant Station Officer, and Senior Chief Fire Service are lying vacant for a long time. And in spite of this crisis, Nagpur Municipal Corporation also deploys firefighters in various places like washing idols and cleaning wells which are not their job at all. Even the corporators often misuse the services of firemen to a great extent.
Sources have also said that with the sanctioned strength, the department has been able to manage only four fire stations. However, it was handling nine stations as well while another one was about to arrive which would add to the workload considerably. Sources have also told that a 2008 government resolution also explicitly prohibited the use of trained firefighters for jobs other than attending fire and rescue calls.
