Water logging in West NGP Colony due to faulty storm water network

With the first monsoon rains, the worst fears of the residents are about to come true because the stormwater drain starts to overflow.

Nagpur: The city is all excited about the arrival of monsoon, but over 100 residents of Shramik Co-operative Housing Society, Yogendra Nagar in West Nagpur are marooned as their area is waterlogged due to a faulty stormwater network.

“Due to the faulty stormwater network laid by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) a few years back, rainwater will flood our houses this year as well. A drain passes through the street which is connected to a pit. Even in the non-rainy season, the sump and drain get clogged about once or twice a month due to accumulation of filth including garbage, leading to overflows,” Local residents said, adding that they have been taking up this issue with NMC for the last three years.

With the first monsoon rains, the worst fears of the residents are about to come true because the stormwater drain starts to overflow. Due to the heavy amount of water coming from the hill of Ramdevbaba Engineering College, the drain gets jammed.

Angered by the repeated inconvenience, residents have also claimed that the civic body has taken no steps to resolve the problem despite several complaints being submitted to the office of Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B.

Residents continued to raise the same issue

To get rid of the problem, the residents also met the officials of Mangalwari zone. In the inspection, it has come to the fore that in the beginning only four inch diameter pipe was used for drainage of rain water. In the year 2014, the width of the pipe was increased to 8 inches, but even this did not solve the problem.

The residents have requested the Nagpur Municipal Corporation officials to replace the existing pipe with a diameter pipe of about 12 inches and modify the sump. But this was not considered. Local residents said, “Till date no concrete solution has been found by the authorities.”

The residents continued to raise the same issue with the elected representatives of the area and in the year 2019 an inspection was conducted by the technical team of Nagpur Municipal Corporation. The team concluded that there is absolutely no scope for a permanent or concrete solution to the same issue.

“Talking to TOI, NMC’s executive engineer, Mangalwari zone, Girish Wasnik has assured a spot inspection of the area. Nagpur Municipal Corporation is committed to resolve civic issues raised by citizens,” they said.
