Youth sentenced to life imprisonment for practicing witchcraft
At a time when the district has gained notoriety for atrocities accusing the backward classes of practicing black magic and witchcraft.
Chandrapur: 20 years old Ashish alias Dadu Devtale was sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday only after District and Sessions Judge-I VD Kedar was found guilty of killing an elderly man on suspicion of witchcraft in 2019.
At a time when the district has gained notoriety for atrocities accusing the backward classes of practicing black magic and witchcraft. This punishment can also act as a deterrent. Between April and September this year, there have been 4 separate cases of attacks on backward class communities in the district.
According to the prosecution, Ashish Devtale, a resident of Arhar Navargaon in Bramhapuri tehsil, had molested the sister-in-law of the complainant about two years ago.
It was only after this incident that the relative of this woman had beaten up Ashish a lot. And then to avenge his humiliation, Ashish had accused the complainant’s father of practicing witchcraft and black magic. And the fateful day when the complainant’s father was sleeping alone in the house. Ashish attacked him with an ax and then the old man was killed on the spot.
Sessions Judge Kedar convicted Ashish for the crime
A case has been registered against Ashish under sections 302 and 450 of the IPC. And Brahmapuri’s PSO Yogesh Pardhi has investigated the matter and has also filed a charge sheet.
Based on the statements and evidence of all these witnesses, Sessions Judge Kedar convicted Devtale for the crime. And then he was also sentenced to life imprisonment and was also fined up to Rs 5,000 as an additional prison sentence of about one year.
Ashish was then convicted of the case under section 450 of the IPC and sentenced to 5 years in prison.
