2 Nagpur municipal corporation schools install rainwater harvesting system

Nagpur: NSSCDCL and NMC on Friday inaugurated the first of its kind Internet of Things (IoT) based groundwater recharge system through rainwater harvesting in two Nagpur Municipal Corporation schools.
The pilot projects are also part of the much larger European Commission-funded ‘URBAN LEDS II’ project, Which has been implemented in district Nagpur with the help of ICLEI South Asia.
Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited and ICLEI teams have carried out scientific investigations to identify the potential groundwater recharge areas in the city in light of the increasing demand for water and the very important need to improve the groundwater table of the area.
Two schools run by Nagpur Municipal Corporation – Bharat Nagar and Sant Kabir School – were selected to develop ground water recharge through rainwater harvesting with a combined capacity of about 8 lakh liters per annum.
Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited CEO Buveneswari S said that remote monitoring of ground water level and water quality using IoT is also a unique and innovative part of the project. It has explained that very important parameters like pH, TDS (total dissolved solids), electrical conductivity, and ground water level will be monitored on real time to keep track of the system performance.
Save water for better tomorrow
Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited CEO has said that based on preliminary technical studies and pilot projects, a city-wide detailed plan is being developed. The vision of NMC is to take forward ground water recharge projects with the help of rainwater harvesting throughout the city, using scientifically appropriate designs and methodologies.
While inaugurating the arrangements, Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari while appreciating the efforts of Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Nagpur Smart City has said that it is very important to save water for a better tomorrow. The mayor has also said that the Nagpur Municipal Corporation is also reusing and recycling waste water and supplying it to the power plant.
Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited environment division, general manager, Dr. Pranita Umredkar, in her introductory remarks have also talked about the importance of rainwater harvesting and the site selection process.
Former standing committee chairman Pradeep Pohane, East Nagpur MLA Krishna Khopde, Lakadganj zone chairperson Manisha Atkare, Deepak Wadibhasme, and corporators Rajkumar Sahu were also present on the occasion.
