Dr Abhay Shukla of Jan Arogya Abhiyan has told that there is a group of workers working inside the healthcare sector.
Dr Shukla has said that “We have surveyed the cases of about 2,579 covid patients. And talked to the relatives of the patients and also audited the bills received from the hospital. About seventy-five percent of them were admitted inside private hospitals. And we have found that 75% were overcharged. The amount overcharged was around Rs 10,000 to Rs 1 lakh.”
Most of these patients were admitted inside the hospital due to the second wave of the covid epidemic. Dr Abhay Shukla has also claimed that at least 220 of all these patients were women. And they spent around Rs 1 lakh to more than Rs 2 lakh from the actual bill. Whereas in 212 covid cases, the patients or their relatives have paid more than two lakh rupees.
Rates of treatment COVID-19 at private hospitals
Dr Abhay Shukla said that the Maharashtra government had also made such an announcement that the rates of treatment of coronavirus in private hospitals would be regulated. And these official instructions have been ignored at all. Dr Abhay again said that many of these patients or their families have faced financial crisis. Families have been forced to sell jewellery, borrow money from relatives.
According to the survey, around 1,460 (56%) patients or their relatives have faced all these conditions. Seema Bhagwat’s husband dies of mucormycosis, a fungal infection contracted by some covid-19 patients. He has said that he was inside the hospital for about 38 days and then he was presented with a bill of about Rs 16 lakh.
