Mahavitran prosecutes 1,376 customers for meter tampering

In the last year, Mahavitaran has taken action against a total of 1,376 consumers for electricity manipulation. In order to put an end to this extortion, around 2.5 crores has been retrieved as a penalty from these individuals. In addition, criminal cases have been filed.
According to Mahavitaran’s actions, the majority of the consumers were using magnets or chips to disguise the flow rate of the meter. The use of a controller was also observed in some locations.
MSEDCL has taken measures against 4,270 customers in the industry’s Nagpur circle in the last three years. The MSEDCL took action against 1,446 consumers in the fiscal year 2018-19. A total of 299.91 lakh in fines were managed to recover.
Similarly, in 2019-20, a fine of 249.76 lakh was recovered from 1448 customers. In 2020-21, a fine of 176.38 lakh was retrieved from 915 users.
Since March 20, 2021, 461 consumers have been arrested for messing with electricity meters. 84.2 lakhs were managed to recover from them once more.
Dilip Dodke, Mahavitaran’s chief engineer, stated unequivocally that the meters are being heavily supervised. To avoid criminal action, youngsters should not engage in any illegal activity. Meter tampering is a serious violation of the Electricity Act. In this case, a criminal case has been filed under Section-135. On the finding of guilt of the offense, there is a statutory requirement for up to three years in prison. When tried to compare to meter readings, such consumers are charged twice the bill.
