Four sarus cranes were seen in Bhandara district

Nagpur: During the annual census of birds in the Bhandara district, four storks have been seen. This exercise is going to continue for about two more days in the neighboring Gondia district.

As on 18th June, the census exercise has been started in Gondia and Bhandara districts with the help of wildlife NGO Sustaining Environment and Wildlife Assemblage (SEWA), Gondia and Save Ecosystem and Tigers (SEAT), Bhandara.

Shahid Parvez Khan, Founder and Honorary Wildlife Warden of Save Ecosystem and Tigers, has also said about this, “Exercises were carried out at 19 places considered to be potential habitats of long-range birds. Four birds were recorded in Tumsar taluka near Bhandara.”

Birds were chirping early in the morning near a field adjacent to the Gonditola Lake. The batch also includes two adults and two juveniles. “The sighting of four storks is good news. We have been practicing since 2017, but only two to three birds used to be recorded,” Shahid Parvez Khan said.

Yogesh Kumbhejkar has prepared a Saras Conservation Plan

In Maharashtra, Saras Saras is found only in Gondia and Bhandara districts. After the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court brought attention to the plight of the birds through a suo moto PIL, For the first time the district administration and forest department officials took great interest in saving the birds. Till now this exercise was done by the volunteers in isolation.

However, Collector Yogesh Kumbhejkar has prepared a Saras Conservation Plan in Bhandara, under which nine ‘Saras Mitras’ have been appointed.

These volunteers regularly monitor birds with the participation of NGO Seva and Seet. In the same year, 25 swayamsevaks including Bhandara’s Deputy Patron Rahul Gavai have participated in the exercise.
