Government sets up three-tier panels to monitor Maha Gene Bank

A State Level Committee, headed by the Chief Secretary and PCCF and also Member-Secretary, Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board (MSBB), will also be the main component for overall monitoring of the projects.

Nagpur: After documenting the original resources, To oversee the implementation of the fully established MGB with the aim of preserving them and adding value to the community that preserves this rich diversity, The state government has constituted three-tier committees.

A State Level Committee, headed by the Chief Secretary and PCCF and also Member-Secretary, Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board (MSBB), will also be the main component for overall monitoring of the projects.

MSBB will also be the nodal agency for implementing the projects. The second working committee will be headed by Principal Secretary (Forest) and MSBB Member-Secretary as its Secretary. Along with this, there will be another committee at the district level as well. It will be headed by the Collector while the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DECF) will also be its member-secretary.

Principal secretaries of all departments, and officers dealing with biodiversity issues such as tribal, education, forest, environment, urban and rural development, agriculture and others will also be members of the committees.

Preserve genetic and molecular specimens of same species

Funded by RGSTC, Maharashtra Gene Bank is also a collaborative work of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa, Indian Institute Science Education & Research (IISER), Pune, and the National Centre for Cell Science (NCSS), Pune, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, & College of Fisheries, Ratnagiri In which there is also the participation of about 13 NGOs, Out of which two (BAIF and CEE) are All India Organizations.

Till the date of 21-23 September, the report of the gene bank was presented at a three-day conference in Pune itself. The state has approved the report on the date of April 29, 2022.

Maharashtra Gene Bank will also work on marine, crop, veterinary, freshwater, grassland biodiversity, conservation and management of forest rights areas, and regeneration of forests. It will also exploit indigenous knowledge resources, Will also work on documenting knowledge of these same species and local communities, and will also preserve genetic and molecular specimens of these same species.

MSBB officials have said that over the next five years, ₹172.39 crores will be spent on these seven focus areas.
