The private hospital where the man died has declared him a positive case of dengue on the basis of a rapid antigen test, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is also treating it as a suspected dengue death.

Along with this, NMC Malaria and Filariasis Officer Dr Jasmine Mulani has also informed that the sample of the deceased will be sent to NIV Pune for reconfirmation as well as serotyping.

Just last month, the NMC appealed to private doctors and hospitals not to confirm any patient with dengue or malaria without a confirmatory test. Nevertheless, the private hospital informed the relatives of the patient that it is a dengue death.

The Malaria and Filariasis Department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has also placed the matter before an audit committee to ascertain whether dengue was the actual cause of death.

The test positivity rate has increased from 8% in October to 12%

The deceased used to go to Sawangi in connection with work. He developed a fever on the date of 26 October and had to be admitted to the hospital three days later. And along with this, the private hospital had done a rapid test and he was also found to be dengue positive. He had no co-morbidities at all.

However, on the date of November 2, after his condition deteriorated, he has been shifted to another hospital in Ramdaspeth. Again, his rapid test was found positive for dengue. He passed away on the date of 9 November due to bleeding from the nose and damage to the lungs.

A team led by Dr. Jasmine Mulani has surveyed the house of the deceased for preventive measures like fogging and spraying. “There was no big place for any kind of mosquito breeding near his house. His cooler was also clean. There is also a possibility of him getting infected in Sawangi.” Dr. Jasmine Mulani said.

No deaths have been officially recorded from dengue this year, while the confirmed cases have risen to 92. Of these, 16 were found in the first 14 days of the date of November. The test positivity rate has increased from 8% in October to 12%. Over 130 suspected patients have been reported to the NMC in November. The annual positivity has increased to 12.7% with 92 out of 724 suspected people testing positive.

Mulani also said that hospitals have once again been asked to submit full details of suspected and confirmed patients.
