Stop mixing garbage or face action, NMC warns private firms

Nagpur: Deeply troubled by the city’s fall in the latest Swachh Bharat rankings, the NMC (Nagpur Municipal Corporation) has warned both the door-to-door collection firms – BVG India and AG Enviro – to either improve their performance by December 15 or expect to face action.

In the wake of district Nagpur’s fall from 18th to 21st in the ranking, city commissioner Radhakrishnan B has also stressed on the need for scientific disposal of waste in the dumping yard. And he has also directed the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department to pick up only the segregated waste.

Also confirming the development, the SWM Nodal Officer of Nagpur Municipal Corporation whose name is Dr. Gajendra Mahalle. He has told that even after appointing 2 agencies, mixed waste was also being found in the dumping yard of the city in Bhandewadi. However, it has been said that the city generates approximately 1,100-1,200 metric tonnes of waste every day. Only about 35%-40% of the segregated waste is being taken to the dumping yard.

Gajendra also said that this is happening despite almost 60% of the citizens handing over the segregated waste to both the firms.

It has also been found from the inspection of different areas that the employees engaged in both the firms are mixing the garbage. Residents are also handing over the waste separately.

It is also learned that Nagpur Municipal Corporation has started the process of 100% processing of entire city waste at Bhandewadi Dumping Yard. And with the present situation, the objective of Nagpur Municipal Corporation to treat the waste will also be defeated.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner whose name is Vijay Deshmukh. He has asked the companies to go to every house and pick up only the segregated waste during collection.

Companies To Improve Functioning

One of the key conditions in the agreements with these agencies is to carry only the segregated waste to the dumping yard. But since the appointment of both the agencies, which present a bad image of the entire city, this condition is not being followed at all.

Vijay has directed the officers of these companies to improve their own functioning or face action by the date of 15 December, following the conditions and rules.

Dr. Gajendra has said that if mixed waste is found to be transported to Bhandewadi, then Nagpur Municipal Corporation will also impose a fine of Rs 100 on the compactor vehicle engaged in the collection of each household.

Firms have also been asked to collect only segregated waste by creating awareness in those areas where they are getting mixed waste.
