Artists are advocating for a dedicated art gallery and paid platform in the city

Nagpur: Pension for artistes and appointment of dedicated art teachers for schools in Vidarbha have been discussed at a meeting organized by the state’s committee to shape Maharashtra’s cultural policy.
Artist and painter Suhas Bahulkar is also heading the visual arts section of the committee, On Thursday, the committee has also visited Nagpur to interact with experts and artists in the field of painting and applied arts.
More than 60 artists and art lovers participated in the meeting to share their expectations, The major topics of discussion included inadequate art galleries in Nagpur, lack of art exhibition organisers, inadequate art teachers in schools, and the possibility of providing pensions for good artists reflecting the provisions for performing artists.
“Expectations regarding visual arts in Maharashtra will be documented and presented, along with concrete suggestions for government action,” Suhas Bahulkar said. Accomplished painter Chandrakant Channe, also from Nagpur, served as a member of the committee and was present at the meeting, along with Suhas Bahulkar.
Art lovers have demanded a paid platform in the city
Let us tell you that former MLA and well-known painter Deenanath Padole has also proposed that the best artists should be eligible for pension according to government schemes. “Performing artistes are already eligible for pension, And we must include painters and sculptors in this category,” Deenanath Padole said.
Several painters including Milind Limbekar, Ashish Bodade, Baban Bedekar, Biswal, and Sadanand Choudary submitted written suggestions. Many of these recommendations focused on setting up a dedicated art gallery in Nagpur following the closure of the Art Gallery at the South Central Zone Cultural Centre.
Art lovers have also demanded a paid platform in the city for organizing art exhibitions similar to Bharat Bhawan, Bhopal.
The issue of faculty shortage in government colleges of fine arts had also been raised in the backdrop of the state’s decision to start new fine arts colleges in Pune, Amravati, and Nashik.
