There will be 9-10 more corporators in the city
According to this decision of the cabinet, the average increase in population from the year 2011 to the present time will be considered only to revise the number of these corporators because in the year 2021 after the epidemic of coronavirus, the census could not be done at all.
Nagpur: On Wednesday the state cabinet fully approved the proposal to increase the number of elected representatives in the municipal bodies. After this decision, the number of corporators in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is likely to increase to around 9-10.
Earlier, the minimum number of councilors in this municipal corporation was up to 65 and the maximum up to 175. Considering the need to accelerate some growth and increase in population in towns and cities, The cabinet has increased the minimum number of this corporator to about 17%. That is, close to the first 65 to 76.
According to this decision of the cabinet, the average increase in population from the year 2011 to the present time will be considered only to revise the number of these corporators because in the year 2021 after the epidemic of coronavirus, the census could not be done at all.
Presently there are about 151 councilors in Nagpur Municipal Corporation. According to NMC officials, the average population of the city is around 28.6-29 lakhs.
The Number of Wards Also Increase
After this decision, the minimum number of councilors for a city with a population of about 24 lakh to 30 lakh will be around 156 and the maximum will be up to 168.
According to the fixed formula, a councilor will represent up to 50,000 people. With this, if the population is assumed to be around 28.6 lakhs and if the population is also counted as around 29 lakhs. Then Nagpur Municipal Corporation may likely to get 9 more corporators. Only after this change the total number of elected representatives in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation is likely to increase to around 160-161. In such a situation, the number of these wards can also increase.
If the number of these councilors is about 160, then there will be only 53 wards, out of which up to 52 will have only 3 members and one will have only 4 members. In this case of about 161 corporators the city is also likely to be divided into about 54 wards, about 53 with three members and 1 ward with 2 members.
However, within the coming days, the exact number will be known after the notification is issued by the urban development department of the state. Apart from the elected corporators, there are also 5 co-opted corporators in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
