Traffic police identified more than 6.6k abandoned vehicles, till now 4,790 owners have been fined

Nagpur: Traffic Police has launched a drive across the city to identified the abandoned vehicles and penalizes their owners.

So far, the traffic police of 10 zones have punished the owners of about 4,790 abandoned vehicles under section 122 of the Motor Vehicles Act and section 283 of the Indian Penal Code.

During a survey, police officers saw around 6,655 vehicles parked or abandoned across the city over the years.

DCP (Traffic) Sarang Awad and Jt CP Aswati Dorje noticed some abandoned vehicles during their rounds, After which such a step was taken. Even in 10 zones of traffic police, there were many complaints of abandoned vehicles.

Then after this, the DCP Sarang Awad came into action and had also instructed his officers to run a special operation. The highest number has been found in the Indora zone. Where more than 1,903 vehicles were found parked outside the houses or on the side of busy roads.

New scrappage policy

A senior police officer of the traffic department has said that people are leaving their vehicles due to a lack of knowledge about scrapping. Most of the owners have completely failed to preserve the documents of their vehicles. He is not at all approaching the Regional Transport Office for permission to scrap his vehicles.

High Court lawyer and Traffic expert Anjan Chatterjee has said that the new scrappage policy is yet to be implemented at all.

Anjan Chatterjee has said that once this is implemented, the exemption in tax portions will also be given. The paperwork will also become much easier. This new policy will also have a provision to hand over such vehicles to a registered scrapyard. The scrapyard will pay a price for the vehicle and then issue a certificate (tradeable in another name also) along with a discount/discount on new purchases to be availed.
