Nagpur University checkmates own players
Shalaka Pagay also claimed that when the girls' team was taken to Bhopal for the Inter-University Chess Tournament in the month of January.
Nagpur: An international chess player has complained that the Nagpur University has not only failed to provide him proper facilities during tournaments outside the city, In fact, instead of blazers, the team has also been handed T-shirts and shorts as match uniforms.
Shalaka Pagay shared her harrowing experience with NU officials with TOI. Shalaka Pagay also claimed that when the girls’ team was taken to Bhopal for the Inter-University Chess Tournament in the month of January, Then they were forced to take a bath in a makeshift bathroom separated only by a tarpaulin sheet.
“It was a shocking experience. The NU coach and manager, who were with us, should have raised their voice or made alternate arrangements in a hotel or lodge where at least there were proper washrooms. If this was not enough, we were denied hot water in extreme cold. We had to walk about 2 km to get hot water. The makeshift bathrooms were unhygienic as the water could not be drained out,” he said.
Shalaka Pagay, a student of the Government Institute of Science, also said that she should have ideally been provided with a blazer and not a T-shirt and shorts as a matching uniform.
They cannot spend on the training of their players
“At NU, they make you wait five years to provide you with a blazer. They (NU officials) told us that they will be awarded after playing the All India University (AIU) tournament. We were given shorts and oversized T-shirts last year. In Surat, clothes with NU written on the back were made mandatory. We were surprised to get the dress,” Shalaka Pagay said.
Claiming that NU was providing them an allowance of only Rs 250 per day, Shalaka Pagay’s companions, who did not wish to be named, said they were taken care of with meager amounts of tea, breakfast, lunch and dinner. need to be kept. “In winters, we also have to buy bedding with the same amount. Many Grandmasters also participate in many tournaments and they are treated the same way,” said the player.
Shalaka Pagay also claimed that when she was taken to out-of-town tournaments, she had to travel sleeper class, without reservations. NU has spent around Rs 30 crore on organizing the Indian Science Congress (ISC). But they cannot spend at all on the training of their players, who can bring laurels not only to the institute but also to the state and the country. We are not treated fairly at all.
