Police caught 58 camels for ‘cruelty’, struggle started to feed, maintain beasts

Nagpur: Amidst the news of cow vigilantes in district Amravati, the matter of keeping an eye on the camels has come to the fore. Police have seized around 58 camels near Dhamangaon, about 50 km from Amaravati city here, following a complaint from a 71-year-old worker from Hyderabad. The camels were being taken to Hyderabad for slaughter, Complainant Jasraj Rupchand alleges. Camel herders say that they have been brought from Kutch to be used as beasts of burden.
It is stated in the FIR that these herds were being taken from a distance of about 1,200 km in Rajasthan, Which is tantamount to cruelty. The official has said that the shepherds are yet to file a petition in the court to get custody of the camels.
Rupchand has said that even in Telangana there is no law against the slaughter of camels in any way. The camels were being taken for slaughter and were facing a lot of difficulty during the journey.
Action Angered Worker
Senior member Mashtru Rabari has said that these camels were being taken to their settlements in Raipur, Nagpur, and Wardha. So that the people of the community can use for transportation. It has also been said in the FIR that he was being brought to Rajasthan Sekar, Whose Rabari counter was saying that he was from Kutch, Were also sharing the documents issued from there. Walking is the only way to cross a distance of more than 1,000 km to the Vidarbha region or to reach Chhattisgarh.
The complainant Rupchand has stated that he had received a tip-off and left from Hyderabad and then a complaint was lodged with the police in Amravati district.
However, this action has angered another worker who works for the shepherds. Sajal Kulkarni, who works with the herders, has said that the Rabaris have been living in the Vidarbha region for generations and only use camels for transportation.
He has said that on the complaint of Jasraj, a similar action was taken two years back also. The seized camels had gone to an NGO at that time.
