Marginal increase in gastro patients with increasing temperature, not due to contamination of water: Doctors

Some doctors have also said that patients with travel histories usually suffer from gastro.

Nagpur: Even after a surge of nearly two months, cases of respiratory diseases are coming down significantly, with gastroenteritis also being reported from new viral infection patients. Doctors say that with the increase in temperature, there has been a slight increase in gastro patients, but this is not at all due to contamination of water.

Some doctors have also said that patients with travel histories usually suffer from gastro.

Pediatrician Dr. Shilpa Hazare has also said that a lot of children are suffering from viral infections in recent times. “We have a 16-year-old girl whose platelet count had dropped. He has a high fever and is now suffering from vomiting and loose motion. Gastroenteritis is triggered by a viral infection. Most of the children initially suffer from respiratory cough, cold, and fever which later turns into gastroenteritis,” she said.

Dr. Shilpa Hazare has also said that his patients are also getting dengue tests negative, although their platelet count is falling. “Symptomatic treatment is given. In case of bacterial infection, we are prescribing antibiotics,” she said.

Cases of upper respiratory infection, sore throat or cough

Dr Sameer Patil, Consultant Gastroenterologist at KIMS-Kingsway Hospitals said that the slight increase in infections is due to the travel history of our patients. “The patients we are seeing have developed diarrhea after a visit or after attending a function. Most of them are managed on OPD basis and not all require hospitalisation. Adenovirus and norovirus cause diarrhea after eating outside food, contaminated water or raw food. Yet, patients are not reporting low BP or cholera-like symptoms.” They said.

OCHRI’s consultant gastroenterologist Dr. Rachit Agrawal has said that viral infections increase with the change in weather. “Usually, cases of upper respiratory infection, sore throat or cough and cold are seen But this time gastro cases have increased. The virus can also affect the digestive system. Viral diarrhea has increased since last one week, probably due to rise in temperature. Youngsters who frequently eat outside food are commonly seen getting infected, but they are from all age groups.” They said.
