Attack on Doctor: Case registered against 5-7 people under strict law

Doctor Shishir Shivastava of Kunal Hospital spoke to the media on Friday and demanded action against the culprits under the Doctors Protection Act.

Nagpur: After an on-duty doctor at Kunal Hospital was attacked by friends and relatives of a patient, the police on Friday started cracking down on the matter. A case has been registered against a group of about five to seven unidentified persons under relevant sections along with the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions Act. Which was a major demand of IMA and Medicos in the city. Till late night on Friday, no one had been arrested at all. Police sources have said that in the next 24 hours, around three to four people will be arrested.

Doctor Shishir Shivastava has said that a case has been registered against him under the Act along with many other sections including assault and rioting. The hospital authorities have already given the CCTV footage of the entire attack incident and all relevant evidence to the police and are still waiting to take action.

Strict action taken against attackers

The investigating officer of this case has said that the arrest will be made in the next few hours. Sources have also told that the post-mortem of the deceased has been done on Friday and the body has been handed over to the relatives. The last rites have also been done on Friday. The deceased 28-year-old was declared brought dead by the on-duty medical officer Dr Natiq Parwez. After which the angry patient’s friends and relatives attacked the doctor. Friends and relatives also ransacked the entire hospital.

President of the Nagpur branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Dr Sanjay Deotale has said that strict action should be taken against the attackers. It is indeed a very difficult situation for a doctor to explain to relatives that the moment they bring a patient to a very serious condition Or just bring it to ‘dead’ condition. Attacking medicos is completely unacceptable under any circumstances.
