Nagpur Municipal Corporation offers to help city police to catch stray dogs

The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has also observed that there is a provision in Section 44 of the Maharashtra Police Act, which fully permits the police to take stray dogs into custody.

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has offered help to the Nagpur city police in catching stray dogs. In a letter to Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B has also informed them that if required then two dog-catching squads of NMC can be of great help to the city police in catching stray dogs.

The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has also observed that there is a provision in Section 44 of the Maharashtra Police Act, which fully permits the police to take stray dogs into custody. It has further stated that the police may make use of the section and after taking into custody the stray dogs as per the prescribed procedure, also hand over the stray dogs to the Monitoring Committee constituted under Rule 4 of the Animal Birth Control (Dog) Rules, 2001 for their proper placement.

After the order of the High Court, Nagpur Municipal Corporation has already deputed two dedicated dog sniffer squads under the supervision of Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Dr. Gajendra Mahalle and Rohidas Rathod as coordinators for Nagpur city.

Civic chief has also urged the top police officer to instruct

Along with this, the top cop has also issued orders to all the city police stations to identify and count the stray dog ​​feeding places in their jurisdiction.

The civic chief has also urged the top police officer to instruct his subordinates that if the police officers require any assistance from the NMC in implementing the court order, this too can avail itself of the help of the civic body.

It has also urged the CPs to instruct their nodal officers to submit a weekly report on the detention of dogs by the police to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation office of the Deputy Commissioner (SWM).
