GMCH again caught disposing biomedical waste along with other garbage

On Friday, the nuisance detection squad of Nagpur Municipal Corporation from Dhantoli zone issued a show cause notice to the medical superintendent of GMCH for mixing biomedical waste with other solid waste.

Nagpur: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has once again been caught disposing of biomedical waste along with other waste on Friday. And incidentally, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had on Thursday issued notices to six hospitals, including the GMCH, for the same offense.

AG Enviro, who caught hold of the irregularities of GMCH, has also issued a press statement saying that the hospital is repeatedly in complete violation of the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016, which makes it absolutely mandatory to segregate untreated biomedical waste into about four types of colored bags for disposal.

On Friday, the nuisance detection squad of Nagpur Municipal Corporation from Dhantoli zone issued a show cause notice to the medical superintendent of GMCH for mixing biomedical waste with other solid waste. At least around 100 black bags, which should have contained dry and wet waste, But biomedical waste such as saline bottles, injections, needles, saline tubes, PPE kits, Covid testing materials, hand gloves, masks, and operation materials were found in them.

GMCH has not yet adopted a mechanism for the safe disposal

The NMC has also contracted a completely different agency to pick up biomedical waste. Yet, hospitals have reportedly handed over biomedical waste in black bags, as for general waste, to operators.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner (SWM) Dr. Gajendra Mahalle confirmed, “After the incident, the AG Enviro staff did not pick up the garbage from the government hospital at all.”

GMCH has also not yet adopted a mechanism for the safe disposal of biomedical waste at all. Similarly, the risk of infection has increased for the workers working in the Bhandewadi landfill area. GMCH and other hospitals should hand over only separate dry and wet waste to the staff of waste collection agencies.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation had on Thursday issued show cause notices to GMCH, Seven Star Hospital at Jagnade Chowk, Ortho Relief Hospital and Relief Center at Dhantoli, Neuron Brain, Spine and Critical Care Unit, Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Charitable Cancer Hospital, and Research Centre, and Getwell Hospital and Research Institute.
