SEZ – Mihan Nagpur At A Glance

MIHAN or ‘Multi-Model International Passenger and Cargo Hub Airport at Nagpur is a Govt. Of Maharashtra project that deals with enhancing the existing domestic airport of the city as an important international passenger and cargo hub airport, along with creating a massive size Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which would touch the boundary of the airport.

SEZ (Special Economic Zone) :

A huge area of 2,000 Hectares has been created as an important SEZ, which houses oriented units including the IT Companies, Pharma groups, processed food sector, gems and jewelry, garments, consumer electronic goods, and several other types of industries. Also, it has plans to create a road terminal having facilities for parking not less than 900 trucks at one time along with huge warehouse, cold storage, and open stockyard to name a few. Besides, the road terminal, one can find the proposed rail terminal, which is competent enough to handle two trains at a time.

In a sense, one can find MIHAN to be a composite project of road transport, airport, rail terminal, SEZ and several other allied services including healthy city, housing, international school, and others to name a few.

Special Economic Zone: The Infrastructure

It will have the following features added in the infrastructure that goes as under:

• An array of 6, 4, 3 and 2 lane roads.
• State-of-Art Telecommunication Network
• Domestic and Non-domestic – Dual water supply system with a capacity of 100mld
• 246MW Power plant with 25MW Diesel backup
• Sewage and stormwater drainage system
• Entertainment and leisure units like Multiplex, Golf course, Flying club, etc.
• Convention and Exhibition Centre, Value Added Commercial Services Complex
• Residential facilities for employees working in MIHAN complex

Budget

The total budget for the project is Rs. 2,581 Crores (as per 2002 rates), while the investment made in it include Rs. 20,000 Crores in the coming five years.

Employment

• The employment to be generated in the SEZ is around 1, 20,000 direct jobs by the end of 2020 in SEZ.
• Indirect employment is between 2, 40,000 to 3, 60,000 in the coming ten years.

Completed infrastructure work

As per the plans, the government of India has done the following measures to bring the SEZ in the right shape, which include:

• Roads
• Water Supply Scheme
• Electrical Transmission and Distribution System
• Telecom cabling
• Fire Station
• Sewage Disposal System
• Central Facility Building and other related services

The Expenditure incurred on infrastructure so far is not less than Rs. 800 crores which include INR 300 crore for the land acquisition of 2865 hectors. Approx. Rs. 1400 Crores has been invested for the erection of Power Plant for Mihan Project.
