SDP machine is not working in GMCH for one year

During the time of coronavirus in the year 2020, Government Medical College and Hospital was leading the world's largest plasma therapy trial.

Nagpur: SDP (Single Donor Platelet) machine is considered to be Life-saving for cancer and dengue patients. For almost 1 year, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is lying completely useless. Sources have said that the machine is not working at all due to the blood bag crisis.

During the time of coronavirus in the year 2020, Government Medical College and Hospital was leading the world’s largest plasma therapy trial. Which is known as Project Platina. The state government had purchased advanced machines worth crores at the time of this trial. And only one of them was the apheresis machine. Which is a similar device that receives blood drawn from the patient’s or donor’s body. And separates it into various components such as platelets, plasma, red blood cells, and white blood cells.

However, this machine requires a special type of bag to collect the blood. These blood bags were made available by the state government during the Platina project. And because of this, the machine was also working. Project Platina has died untimely and years. It has also been closed in early 2021. So the supply of these special blood bags has stopped. As a result, this advanced machine is also gathering dust.

Price of special bag is Rs 9,000

The blood bank officials of Government Medical College and Hospital have claimed that they have already submitted it to the Haffkine Institute of a proposal to procure these blood bags. Which buys medical machinery and accessories for each GMC across the state. But the proposal is still pending. A pair of this particular bag costs around Rs.9,000.

Doctors have accepted that Single Donor Platelet machines are life savers for cancer and dengue patients.

A senior blood transfusion specialist has said that random donor platelets raise the count to around 3,000 to 5,000 at a time. Single Donor Platelet would increase it to about 55,000 in one go. Single Donor Platelet is safer than random donated platelets.
